A.C. Special Projects Re-Energises Harlow Playhouse with LED Lighting

13th July 2010

A.C. Special Projects Ltd. have provided a colour-changing LED house lighting system for the main auditorium of the Harlow Playhouse theatre in Essex. The energy efficient system has significantly reduced the house lighting’s total power consumption, providing long-term savings in running costs.

The Playhouse hosts a diverse programme of live theatre shows and the performing arts, including music, dance, drama, comedy, children’s entertainment, film and pantomime.

Following a competitive tender, A.C. Special Projects were appointed to specify, supply, install, commission and programme a new house lighting system for the theatre’s auditorium which could double as a stage production lighting rig. A key criteria was that the system provided colour-changing of the room and stage for specific events. The venue was also keen to reduce the lighting rig’s energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

A.C. Special Projects specified 96 Anolis ArcPar 12 fixtures due to the product’s energy efficient and cutting-edge LED light source in a conventional PAR 36 size housing. The units were custom configured as RGBA LED heads, providing the versatility to switch between warm white performance lighting, cooler white general purpose lighting and thousands of colours.

The ArcPar 12 fixtures were fitted with Neutrik EtherCon connectors and installed in clusters of three on a custom manufactured mounting bracket, providing quick and easy removal for servicing or refocusing.

A customised Anolis ArcPower 144 system provides power and distribution, with the lighting operated via Philips Dynalite button panels. A range of looks were programmed to the panels, allowing different preset intensities and colour effects for the various types of productions. For more sophisticated show requirements, the LED fixtures can be controlled directly via DMX from the theatre’s lighting console. In addition, the system is programmed to automatically fade up the auditorium lighting at the end of a film projection.

Harlow Playhouse General Manager, Scott Ramsay, commented: “Thanks to A.C. Special Projects we are now the proud owners of a modern and versatile LED house lights system, offering the opportunity to introduce colour changing capability alongside reduced energy consumption. The colour tone has re invigorated the auditorium. The seating upholstery and carpets look vibrant once more. Many shows have utilised the new house lights to enhance the performance lighting and chases are possible between different colour states. We also occasionally show films - the new system has been tied into our projector controls and the ability to programme the house lights to a blue-state works well during ads and trailers. We’re delighted to have found such an adaptable and energy efficient solution.”
