A.C. Special Projects Provides Versatile Lighting & Audio Solutions for Wycombe High School

21st October 2015

UK - A.C. Special Projects Ltd. (ACSP) have specified, supplied and installed cutting-edge performance lighting and audio systems for various Performing Arts teaching facilities at Wycombe High School in Buckinghamshire.

ACSP were approached to tender for the project owing to their extensive previous track record providing technology solutions to the Education, Drama and Performing Arts sectors.

For the School's main multi-purpose hall, which is used by Drama and Theatre Studies pupils to stage various performances - including an annual Musical or Play, a Drama Festival and a Christmas Pantomime - ACSP's brief was to upgrade the existing conventional lighting to a modern, energy-efficient LED system.

ACSP Director, Lance Bromhead, felt that the comprehensive ProLights lighting range would offer the best results within the school's budget. For the main stage area, ProLights StudioCob full colour LED Pars were used to provide a general colour wash, along with ProLights LumiPix 12 battens for cyc lighting. Extending the performance area out into the large hall space, ACSP provided ProLights Reflex moving washlights and added ProLights CromoSpot 400 LED moving spots for gobo and effects lighting.

As well as improving the School's overall lighting and heating efficiency rating, and thus reducing their carbon footprint, the hall's new low voltage LED system is powered from standard 240V mains without requiring separate dimmers. In addition, as the fixtures utilise solid-state LED technology, they do not require technical staff to work at height in order to change disposable coloured gels or lamps.

The lighting system is controlled by an ultra-portable Jands Vista M1 console. Vista’s award-winning intuitive, graphical user interface allows students and teachers to concentrate on the creativity and design of their show lighting, rather than complicated lighting programming, by letting the Vista v2 software handle the technical details and simply deliver the target stage look they require.

All Vista products run the exact same software and offer the full feature set as found in the range's largest consoles, so the M1 provides a very cost-effective solution without compromising on power, features or performance. A second Vista M1 system and various ProLights fixtures, including Reflex and CromoSpot 400 luminaires, were provided for the School's standalone drama studio.

For the School's newly completed Music Centre, which can be used as a large space for student performances, or split into two separate classrooms via a folding wall, ACSP provided a two-zone audio distribution system - enabling independent control of the music volume level and source selection via a simple wall-mounted control panel in each zone.

Electro-Voice speakers positioned in each zone are wired up to a rack in the Centre’s control room which features a Cloud VTX4400W 4-channel amplifier and CX Zoner mixers. Using the Cloud RSL 6 control panels in each zone, teachers can select the on-board sound for large touch screens mounted between each set of speakers and featuring an integrated PC built into the rear of the panels; or they can select an iPod / phone connected via mini-jack headphone socket input. The system also has the capacity to control a rig of performance lighting fixtures via Jands Vista control, which may be added in due course.

ACSP provided on-site systems training for the School's ICT Services Manager, Steve Woodward, and Subject Leader - Art and Drama, Vikki Jonsmyth-Clarke.

Steve commented: “ACSP have provided first class technical solutions which tick all the boxes for our various needs. We wanted flexible lighting and audio systems which were simple enough for the School's teachers to operate, whilst at the same time featuring eco-friendly designs and delivering high performance.”
