A.C. Special Projects Provides Premier Lighting for Eurostar

1st October 2009

A.C. Special Projects Ltd. provided a selection of architectural lighting fixtures for the new Eurostar Business Premier Lounge at St Pancras International. Designed to fit in with the Victorian architecture of the rest of the station, the lounge offers the ideal place to start a business trip. Customers can hold a meeting with colleagues in the spacious meeting areas or catch up on current events, all in a comfortable and relaxing environment.

After several years of planning, Land Design Studio and Eurostar contracted David Atkinson Lighting Design (DALD) to come up with a contemporary lighting scheme for the main reception, ground and first floor lounges. DALD approached A.C. Special Projects to supply all standard architectural lighting fixtures to meet his specification for the lighting scheme.

Lighting is integral to creating the overall ambience of comfort, exclusivity and cutting-edge design for Eurostar’s business travellers. The design team wanted the entrance and ground floor to have a soft, inviting yet dramatic feel. After a great deal of research and in depth discussion with Eurostar, it was agreed to have a series of bespoke lighting features produced for the ground floor.

Diffuse LTD produced large custom pendant drums made from ceramic tiles and fitted with dimmable compact fluorescent lamps. On entering the reception, one of the large pendant drums helps create a real sense of scale and drama, as well being the main source of light to the space. The reception desk is constructed from opal glass, which was internally lit with cool white LEDs. Behind the desk, Land Design commissioned soft flowing drapes in a neutral colour, which were uplit by custom designed LED strips recessed and incorporated into the floor ventilation grills. The LED strips help to add depth to space almost as a cyclorama would be treated in a theatrical scenario.

With the ground floor reception area being quite long and narrow, scaled down versions of the Diffuse pendants help to open up the space and draw the eye through.

As it was essential to retain as much of the Grade 1 listed building as possible, it was decided to expose elements of the original brick vaulting. DALD therefore chose to uplight the ceiling with the Flos Minimal system, which incorporates T5 indirect and direct 35W metal halide Pure spots for general accent lighting, as well as LED emergency modules. Parts of the ceiling have suspended perforated panels which were backlit with low voltage cold cathode by Oldham Lighting.

To add further perspective to the ground floor lounge, the exposed brick piers were uplit by custom designed Commercial Lighting in-ground fixtures fitted with GE GU10 metal halide lamps.

A major design feature in the space was the use of Flos ‘Romeo Soft’ (by Philippe Starck) table lamps, which have the bases adapted to be incorporated into Land’s custom designed table units.

As with the reception, the window blinds were uplit by the custom LED strips within the ventilation grills.

The first floor lounge has a very different quality to the ground floor lounge, although lower in height and scale. Again, it was decided to have some kind of lighting feature within the space. The design team agreed to use the Weaver & Ducre ‘Sylto’, which was attached vertically to the wall to reflect indirect light into the space. By installing the ‘Sylto’ regularly to the wall, it helps to accentuate the subtle curve of the space. High-level lighting was from trimless Zumtobel T5 fluorescents and metal halide down lights. The main task lighting was again from the Flos Romeo table and floor lamps. Accent lighting to the coffee and drinks station was from low voltage down lights.
