A.C. Special Projects Provide Traxon LED Media Solution for London's Iconic Sea Containers Building

16th February 2016

UK - A.C. Special Projects Ltd. (ACSP) have provided a state of the art Traxon LED Media Tube solution for the north façade of the prestigious Sea Containers building, prominently located near to London's popular South Bank cultural area overlooking the Thames.

With one of the longest river frontages of any commercial building in London, and a distinctive exterior façade design strongly influenced by its former long-term tenant, Sea Container's maritime connections, the development is one of the Capital's most recognisable landmarks.

Following a decision to redevelop the building into a luxury hotel and office space befitting of its riverside status and awe-inspiring views, from the London Eye to London Bridge, building developer, the Byrne Group wanted to utilise a lighting and media system installation to enhance and bring to life at night the building's north façade overlooking the Thames.

Byrne Group considered various LED solutions before commissioning ACSP to supply and install the Traxon LED Media Tube system, after being very impressed by the performance and potential of the product during a demonstration.

ACSP installed over 450 separate 900mm long, slim profile RGB colour-changing LED Media Tubes, which are mounted end to end in pairs within channels of metalwork between each window on the north façade. Designed in Germany, IP67-rated and UV resistant, the tubes are constructed to withstand harsh outdoor elements. In addition, for customers' peace of mind they are backed up by a five year warranty.

Cabling from the fixtures runs back to drivers located on platforms halfway up the building façade (level 7). From these drivers, DMX data cabling is connected to control equipment in the building's basement. Special care had to be taken to calculate the maximum number of fixtures that could be powered from each cable run, to avoid a voltage drop-off.

From the basement, data is fed to the Media Tubes via a rack of Traxon e:cue Video Micro Converters (VMCs), which change DVI to a DMX signal sent from a Traxon e:cue Lighting Control Engine 2 FX media server providing control of the large media installation.

The media server output can be set to a specific static colour or range of colours. In addition, low to medium resolution still images or moving video content can be loaded into the media server, to play back onto the individual Media Tubes.

Currently the fixtures default to blue, matched to complement the prominent roof-top Sea Containers logo. The building illumination comes on at sunset, and goes off at sunrise daily.

In addition to providing the Traxon solution, ACSP also supplied 600 metres of warm white LED tubing, to illuminate a 'funnel-like' structure on the roof-top which the Sea Containers logo is in front of.

The huge scale of the building's internal and external refurbishment project required ACSP to comply with very strict contractor regulations regarding undertaking work on-site. In addition, the company overcame a number of technical and logistical challenges to install the fixtures to the client's requirements and tight timescale.

Since the refurbishment was completed, a number of high-profile companies have moved into the building's office space, including a leading advertising agency and a household-name sports brand.

A.C. Special Projects Director, Lance Bromhead, commented: “Sea Containers is an iconic riverside building overlooking London's South Bank, so we are very proud to be involved in lighting this beautiful landmark. The bold choice for the exterior lighting design provides an eye-catching complement to the venue's distinctive north façade and rooftop cruise liner hull design.”
