A.C. Lighting Supplies Litec System to Leading Motion Capture Studio
1st October 2007
A.C. Lighting has supplied a Litec QX30S square truss grid system to Audiomotion, Europe's largest motion capture studio.
Audiomotion is a multi-award winning studio specialising in the provision of motion capture services to the game development, film and television industries. It has a string of high-profile production credits, including work on the Gladiator motion picture and Citroen C4 Alive with Technology TV commercial.
The company had been using a scaffold system to position 50 state-of-the-art motion capture cameras in their 6,000 sq. ft. studio, but was looking for a more practical truss solution as they expanded into full performance capture for the next generation of high definition gaming, film and television content.
A.C.'s Paul Hadfield was approached by Audiomotion's Matt Rank to quote on a simple 8m x 8m grid, but once Matt realised the true flexibility of the Litec QX30S system, he knew it could fulfil a lot more roles for the company and provide significant savings on project time.
Matt commented: "In the studio we're constantly changing the camera setups for different jobs, so having the Litec grid makes it much quicker and easier to re-configure the setup for each job and capture the increased amount of detail required for full performance, which records body movement as well as the face and hands. The Litec's structure gives us the support and rigidity we need to be able to do this."
Matt also saw the Litec's portability as ideal for Audiomotion's location needs, commenting: "Due to the speed and ease of taking it apart, we can take it on the road, re-assemble it and raise with motors very quickly. It gives us the spans and reaches we need, and the flexibility to do location work in any environment as it can be fully free-standing, so we don't need the support of a building to mount the cameras on."
The full system supplied by A.C. consisted of Litec QX30S truss pieces, Litec Dado corner boxes and CM Lodestar 500kg Model F direct control motors.
Litec's new 'S' version is an evolution of their most widely used standard QX30 truss and features various enhancements, including a newly designed end plate and re-configured diagonal cords for greater support strength and improved overall appearance.
Upon delivery, the truss grid went straight out on a UK location shoot for a forthcoming action film, where it was configured into a multi-level 8m x 18m grid on six Litec Unitowers. The truss has since been re-configured in the company's studio as a 10m x 14m grid.
Due to the need to capture sound at the same time as motion during full performance capture, Audiomotion also used the services of A.C.'s Audio division to supply an 8 channel outboard wireless Trantec system, DBX compressor strips and DBX feedback destroyer for their loudspeaker system.
Summarising his experience using A.C. Lighting, Matt Rank, Audiomotion Systems Manager commented: "I'm extremely impressed with the time and support I had from A.C. in specifying the Litec grid. Due to our requirements changing significantly from the original quote I spent a lot of time on the phone with Paul, and Paul with Litec, checking the suitability of what we were proposing for the location shoot and ensuring it was within our budget."
Audiomotion have a number of other projects already scheduled for the Litec system, including motion pictures for two major film studios and several cutting-edge computer games.
