A.C. Supply City Theatrical WDS for Sex, Chips & Rock 'n' Roll Musical
19th September 2005
A.C. Lighting has supplied two City Theatrical WDS Wireless Data Systems™ for the stage musical production of Sex, Chips & Rock 'n' Roll, currently running at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre.
Situated in the heart of the city, the Royal Exchange Theatre is Manchester's leading producing theatre company, offering a varied programme of plays, concerts and other special events.
The new musical was adapted for the stage by Debbie Horsfield and Hereward Kaye from Debbie's 2003 hit BBC TV series of the same name, which follows the exploits of fictional 60s rock 'n' roll band the Ice Cubes.
Transferring the TV show to the stage presented Lighting Designer Vince Herbert with some challenging scenes, as the story's central characters travel around the country in a MINI and VW Camper Van.
As these vehicles are central to the story, the production team decided to use real vehicles driven across the stage instead of simulating it, but this presented Vince with the technical challenge of finding a wireless DMX system to control the various lighting and effects equipment installed in each vehicle.
Whilst taking a break from the production's design to visit the A.C. Lighting North Tradeshow in May, Exchange Chief Electrician Richard Owen met Gary Fails of US manufacturer, City Theatrical, who was attending the show to demonstrate the company's latest Wireless Data System product range.
City Theatrical's WDS is a group of transmitters, receivers and dimmers that send and receive DMX data without cables. The system utilises 2.4GHz spread spectrum channel hopping technology to provide stable and reliable DMX transmission to multiple receivers. The system's new WDS Rx2 features a built in DMX receiver and auto sensing power supply (100-240VAC) and is designed for hanging by c-clamp, making it perfect for temporary lighting installations. The receiver delivers full speed data transmission and flexible remote dimming and control.
New to the UK, the WDS system is widely used by US stage productions ranging from small regional theatre and music tours right up to large scale Broadway shows.
Richard quickly recognised that the WDS system would provide the ideal solution for his lighting control requirements and ordered two systems through A.C. Lighting. Working closely with A.C., City Theatrical adapted the system for European use, including attaining CE accreditation in view of the growing level of overseas interest in the product.
Exchange Chief Electrician Richard Owen commented: "We're very pleased with the WDS system. It's performed faultlessly throughout the shows and made the job of lighting inside the vehicles a totally hassle-free experience. A.C. have also provided excellent support and backup throughout the sale."
A.C. Lighting is a main UK distributor for City Theatrical.
